Chapter Seven

Rick lay in the backyard covered in toys and assorted stains, yet again, with Josh currently crawling all over him. Rick had become his favorite jungle gym, and the little guy had become Rick’s favorite toddler. They’d played and had adventures to the park and to the ice cream store. Rick was going to miss the little guy when he went home. To that end, Rick had appointed himself Josh’s official playmate and spent as much time as he could with the little man.

He’d even taken his holidays early, leaving his assistant, Janet, at the helm, and whiled away his days with an adorable toddler. Bear had to take care of the diner, and Jenny seemed to have numerous appointments, but Rick didn’t mind. He could truly be himself in front of Josh and never have to worry about being judged. That was the beauty of young children: They weren’t jaded by others’ views of what was considered normal.

Over the past couple days, Jenny and Rick had become close. They would spend hours talking while Josh slept and Bear was at the diner. He’d even info dropped strange facts on her without fear. Rick could honestly say the woman amazed him, raising Josh on her own while working full time—the exact opposite of Josh’s father, who was a less-than-reputable man who’d walked out on them and signed away his parental rights within moments of Josh being born. But Jenny never felt sorry for herself. She, along with her brother’s financial help, pushed forward and made the best life she could for Josh. To look at Josh, all you saw was a happy, healthy little boy. Jenny had done a wonderful job.

Bear and Jenny were out having a little brother-sister time while shopping for more groceries. Jenny had personally asked Rick if he could stay with Josh as she wanted to talk to her brother alone but didn’t elaborate. They’d been gone for over two hours now, and Josh was just about ready for his afternoon nap when Rick heard the front door open. He picked up Josh and began to walk toward the sliding patio doors when Jenny came out, eyes and nose red as if she’d been crying.

Rick rushed to her. “Jenny, what’s wrong? Are you okay? Where’s Bear?”

Jenny smiled, though her lips trembled, and took Josh, hugging him closely. “He’s in the house. Rick, I have no right to ask anything of you, but he’ll need you now more than ever. Please go find him.”

Without a second thought, Rick ran for the house. He had to find Bear; he had to find out what happened. What if he’s hurt? No…Jenny would have taken him to the hospital. He rushed through the door and into the kitchen, but Bear was nowhere in sight and there were no groceries on the counter. What happened? Living room empty, bedroom nothing—Rick was getting anxious, and that was never good.

“Bear? Bear, where are you?” Rick yelled, giving up the pretense of calm.

“I’m in here,” Bear’s broken voice answered.
